Torrey Pines Gliderport weather conditions are now available on your cell phone. New cellular phones can be used for more than just talking. There is a lot you can do with a limited display and keyboard. So now wether you are home or mobile, you can always know the weather conditions. If you have a cellular phone that supports WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and you have signed up for web access with your cellular provider, then you have everything you need.
Here is how I did it, your mileage may vary. I purchased a Kyocera model 3035 cellular phone that supports WAP, BREW, and lots more. It was $20, so you do not need a fancy and expensive device. I signed on with Verizon as my provider and pay $7 extra per month for their Mobile Web feature. Then I wrote a script that accesses the Torrey Pines Gliderport weather database and displays the weather data in a succinct format just for cell phones.
The first number after the label is the 5 minute average. The value in parenthesis is the 15 minute average. So in the example above, both the 5 and 15 minute average wind speed is 8 mph. The 5 minute average wind direction is 273 and the 15 minute average is 268. Note that the weather station has been calibrated such that WEST (270 degrees) is straight out to the Ocean, even though this is not completely true. It was done this way to make things easier to understand.
