File Transfer Rate Comparisons

The diagram below shows file transfer rates using my computer quipment and network. The tests consisted of measuring the time to transfer a 1GB (8Gbit) file from a windows machine to various other devices. For example, the file was transfered from the Windows machine to a NetGear ReadyNAS NV+ over the network. The file was also transfered to an external HD (Voyager Q) which has multiple interfaces.

The values in parenthesis are: Theoritical Speed, Actual Speed both in MBps and transfer Duration in seconds. The time for each transfer is in RED text. Firewire 1394b was not tested due to lack of availability of that interface.

It is no surprise that the results show the SATA interface is the fastest (18 seconds). The slowest is the Ethernet interface to the NetGear ReadyNAS 101 seconds. The USB and Firewire interfaces were fast (26 and 29 seconds), but still slow compared to the SATA interface.
