Bert and Ernie's Excellent Adventure

image image image image image
On February 8, 2008 we discovered a mother hummingbird had laid two eggs in an outdoor chandelier at the front of our home. This event kicked off six weeks of intense webcam and photographic documentary. We referred to our new visitors as Bert and Ernie and awaited further development. Seventeen days later, in the early morning hours of February 25 Bert and Ernie hatched. For the next several weeks we watched and waited for the hatchlings to fledge. It was 22 days later, on March 18 at 10:30 AM that Bert left the nest and two days later on March 20 at 4:10 PM when Ernie followed.

Image The species is known as Anna's Hummingbirds. The nest is round and about 1 1/2 to 2" in diameter. The nest is built of very small twigs, lichen and other mosses, and often lined with downy feathers or animal hair. The nest materials are bound together with spider silk or other sticky materials.
