Torrey Pines Gliderport Weather - Can I fly?

No one should ever tell a pilot when to fly. There are too many variables that affect a pilot's readiness for flying. Weather conditions are one of the lesser important items to consider when thinking of flying. Factors such as a pilot's experience, mental attitude, equipment, and a host of other items should be factored into the decision making process. However, the Torrey Pines Gliderport web page can only look at the wind speed and wind direction. It doesn't know about rain, fog, sleet, visibility, time of day, humidity, or a million other factors. So with that in mind, the page looks at only wind speed and direction and color codes the web page TITLE. Don't rely on it to tell you when to fly. Think of it as just one of many factors to consider.

any direction		 Wind is calm making flight unlikely. Great conditions for a student and anyone wishing to get exercise walking up from the beach.
Orange Direction 6 to 14 mph
>40 degs.		 The wind speed is strong and coming far off west, probably not wise to fly, especially without a speed bar.
Brown Poor 6 to 14 mph
>25 & <40 degs.		 The wind speed is good, but it is coming from a direction that is unlikely to support an enjoyable flight.
Green Good 6 to 10 mph
<25 degs.		 Should be good flying but the wind speed is a little weak. You might be on the beach if you're not watchful of the wind conditions.
Blue Excellent 10 to 14 mph
<25 degs.		 Wind speed and wind direction should make for a great flight. Might be a little strong for new students, but should be good for most folks.
Purple Be careful 14 to 20 mph
<25 degs.		 The wind speed is a bit high. The difficulty with flying will probably be getting up and perhaps getting down. But once up, should be pretty nice.
Red No way >20 mph
any direction		 The wind speed is very high. If you have a death wish, it might be a good time to fly.
